One definition of liberal is one who follows the philosophy of liberalism. Another is one who is broad-minded or not bound by authoritarianism, orthodoxy, or traditional forms. I say with certainty that Christ should be identified with the second definition, as he consistently acted in opposition to the religious establishment of His day. The Jewish people were not expecting a Messiah like Jesus proved to be. Instead of meeting people's expectations, Christ flew in the face of them. He shunned people who thought themselves righteous and instead hung out with the social rejects and "sinners". Christ did have any desire to be with the "holier-than-thou" types. Instead, He wanted to be around those who realized they were lacking and wanted help to become something that they could not achieve on their own.
The great irony is that many modern day Christians will Amen! a message condemning religious elitists as I have described while not seeing how they themselves are just as bad or worse. I used to be one of those self-righteous, puffed up, holier-than-thous. I would like to think that now I am more like Christ and less like the stereotype Christian that is often criticized on this forum.

Christ is misinterpreted by many people who try and follow the Christian faith. They must realize that man has influenced the great teachings. Christ was probably much more liberal than most people who follow the religion, he never said anything about homosexuals, that was man's doing, and yet people still preach that to people. That is one, judging, which we should never be, and two, just not in the teachings of Christ.
Edit: And no liberalism is a set of ideas, as are politics. They can exist outside a defined politcal system without the adoption or prescense of that politcal system.

Christ was the most liberal person who ever lived.
The bible proves nothing. Look at His life for the answer.

Most people tend to agree he was and we don't need bible verses to cite this nor will I research them unless you pay for my time.
I can paraphrase some examples, the key one is the stoning of Mary Magdeline which was acctable under Jewish rules and Jesus was a Jew. He said the first one to stone her had to be TOTALLY WITHOUT SIN.
Now, Where did MOSES ever say that one!
And this is one of the things that got him into hot water with the local Jewish leaders, the Pharasees, who didn't like him interferring with acceptable Jewish law.

Christ had nothing to do with politics. Liberals exist in democracy. Democracy was not a form of government during His time.

Jesus Christ was way ahead of his time. To call his thinking and actions progressive or liberal considering the time in which he lived is an understatement.

Yes he was and I think he would be against what most Christians are doing with Capitalism! He would most likely relate it to the Roman empire. Jesus was more like a communist than a capitalist.

Well, he was a communist. He often told others to sell or give up everything to follow him and give the money to the poor.
