We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true church and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "Do you believe the group you represent is the ONLY TRUE CHURCH on the face of the earth?
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like, "Well every church has a measure of truth BUT...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE (john 14:6). No ligitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation EXCLUSIVELY, but the Cults (the counterfeits) do.
To learn more about the cults and how to detect them you can check out Macgregor Ministries on the web or go to

a cult by definition follows the word of one of it's members without question. The cult insist upon the members not having contact with people outside it's own organization. And usually require some show of loyalty (mostly money). If the leader of a cult dies and the group continue then it is considered a religious moment.

Cult means worship of a personality. If they worship the living leader of their group, they are a cult.

My Christian perspective-If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well by golly it is a duck. Most religious groups are taught by one person with no others having input. They follow what the leader says without questioning it. That is a cult.

if they mention a mass marriage with cyanide cocktails for afters, I prolly wouldn't bother. Same as if they have a rota for kidnapping new people.

seriously, if at any point somebody tries to force an idea upon you which you disagree with to the point of revulsion, run away

Ask them to recite the Apostles Creed. This is pretty foundational to Christian organizations.

the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.>

*Universal : fellowship of all believers from all times.
