I know I need a more advanced software. I want to put a generic contract on a pdf and just have it so that all we have to do is fill in the blanks. Does anyone know what software I need?

Use fields in MS word, and lock the document (protect). Then use PDF creator to do it.

Else, you need to buy acrobat software

If you search for "free PDF" you will find plenty of software sites in Yahoo. (e.g. at http://www.primopdf.com/). PDF files are made due to security requirements for protection against tampering or unauthorised changing. Therefore you usually don't want that others type into them.
PDF forms contain fields to be filled. To produce such documents you need a more advanced software.

You can "print" a document (not just Word) to pdf using a virtual printer driver such as PDF995.

But this won't give you the ability to type into the PDF, unfortunately... hope this is of some limited use.

If you do not have Adobe software you only got 2 options. 1. Third party software 2. Open the file in Preview -> Tools -> Text Tool. Then do a copy and paste Or, you can just find the original file. If you saved the file as a .pdf, you should have saved the original file first as you were working on it.
