Try prunes and apple juice. They both will help losen him up so he can go. He's probably holding it to long because he knows it's going to hurt. Just keep up with the apple juice all day for drink for about a week or so. He'll start going soon. If not you might want to get him to a doctor for being stopped up. His doctor can give him something for it to help him out.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Activia Yogart works great for my son- he's only 14 months, but it still helps quite a bit- I asked this question a while back - mainly my son had very hard poopy and had a hard time getting it out. The yogart really worked, so I'd try that, but I'd also call the doctor since it's been so long he's gone. Goodluck!
P.S. stay away from bananas and regular yogart- our doctor said those make your poop harder
Prunes and prune juice might help some too.

It might be time for a trip to the Doctor.

You could also give him a laxative made just for kids, but make sure it has a stool softener in it. Lots of apple and prune juice if he'll drink it. Also any foods high in fiber as well.

If it's been over a week you need to get an enema and try to get him flushed out. Kids die from impacted colons because they're constipated for prolonged periods of time. My daughter has constipation troubles, also. Get him "flushed" out and then cut back on the milk. Also, on the advice of my pediatrician, I keep mineral oil on hand. If she goes 2 days without a BM, she gets a teaspoon in her juice. Talk to your pediatrician, though, and see what they say becaues every doctor will recommend different.

WOW- I am / was going thru this just a few weeks ago. They have several OTC laxitives for kids, one even taste like Root Beer. It took two days for it to kick in. I also bought Diaper Rash spray and it is "Magic Spray".. The doctor prescribed this powder form laxitive to put in his drink until he was regular again. It had no taste and worked like a charm. There is always the good ol' supository... They also recommened Benefiber. Good Luck I know it's hard!

I have had to sneak some dark Kareo syrup into my kids chocolate milk before when they were constipated. Works like a charm! Or if he drinks a few glasses of water and eats some raw carrots that will do it too. Best of luck to you.

Glycerine suppositories! Works like a charm. Works good as a threat, too. Like, "if you can't go, I'll have to use one of these," but said in a concerned, parental tone of voice (not mad). The can't hold it in anymore after getting a suppository.
Its be a good idea to ask the pediatrician, too.

Its probably his diet if its this ongoing. Is he taking a vitamin with iron in it? Or something with extra calcium? These things cause constipation.

He needs fiber every day, good fiber, raw veggies, whole grains, or even benefiber mixed in his morning juice.
