LOOKING FOR THE SPECIFIC ANSWER IN 1965.I HAVE A BATHROOM THAT WAS BUILT IN THAT YEAR AND CODE ENFORCEMENT SAYS I CANNOT UPDATE IT BECAUSE THE CEILING IS TO LOW.MY ATTORNEY SAYS IF THE REGULATION WAS DIFFERENT THEN CODE ENFORCEMENT CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT SINCE I PURCHASED THE PROPERTY THIS WAY. i live in onodaga county town of geddes

contact your county court house, and get a copy of the permit that was filed when the basement was finished.

if you remodel your space would have to be brought up to existing code. in 1965 it was up to local building codes and could be diferent all around the country. some areas had no codes. since then there are national standards for buildings. you can "repair" an existing structure and keep it the same but it can't be modified.
