Get rid of the carpet all together. It will also help your sinuses if you have problems with them.Battling dust is an every day around the clock chore.I'm in the process of removing all the carpet out of my house, and I can already see a difference.
Get an air purifier too. Those work great.

Linoleum adhesive will not bond well to carpet. Not to mention that the expansion and contraction of the carpet can wreck your efforts. You've got to rip it up.
I have this same problem, and we installed laminate wood flooring (which looks nicer than plain old linoleum), and it helps. You would have to probably take everything out to install linoleum anyway, so do it right the first time and get rid of the carpet.

I've heard of people using some type of carpet cleaner that help eliminates dust mites, and vacuuming with a vacuum that has a good filter.

You do not want to lay a floor over carpet. This is a very bad idea!
You can however lay carpet over a hard floor.
I would suggest ripping out the carpet and replacing it with Pergo.
This will surely help with your alergies! Good luck!

if you are sure you are suffering from those dust mites, get rid of the carpet. use a mop or damp cloth to wipe down your room. a vacuum cleaner just re-distributes the dust. check the air filter in your furnace. do you have enough humidity in your room?

I don't think that would work for you. You can buy plastic floor covers to go over your carpet though. They have little bumps on the bottom to grip the carpet.
I would treat the carpet before you cover it though, there are many chemicals and natural products that will kill those little buggers.

no, linoleum needs to glued to a smooth surface free of dirt etc. The carpet has lint, fuzz, dust, etc.in it and has different textures therefore the linoleum would not lie flat and would eventually crack.

linoleum would be better than carpet. in the meantime vacum daily, and when you wash your sheets add some menthol eucalyptus as it will eliminate a load of dust mites.

Vaccum it everyday. It seems like carpet keeps the dust down instead of making things worse.
