running it under cold water was the right thing to do...

i've read several people telling you that it will make the burn worse but this is incorrect (cold is a vaso-constrictor which means it shrinks the blood vessels, restricting blood flow to the burn site which helps stop tissue damage).

use aloe vera gel on it and nothing else. you can put the gel in the fridge so it will be soothing when you apply it. wrap the finger with gauze wrap after applying the aloe vera gel. keep it as dry as possible expect when necessary (like showering, washing dishes, etc).

applying things such as lotions, oils, ointments, or food products (such as butter-stupid way to treat a burn) will make the burn worse b/c these trap heat beneath the skin and can also lead to infection.

if the burn blisters or splits open, do not apply ANYTHING to it until seen by your dr. you more than likely will need a special cream called silvadene which is only available by prescription

you can take ibuprofen for the pain. take 200-400mg every 6 hours as needed but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours

good luck

Well, according to my Red Cross Lifeguard Training book, you're supposed to cover to burn with dry, sterile dressings, and wrap losely with a bandage.

According to the side of my Neosporin tube, you're supposed to put Neosporin on it and then cover it with a bandage if you want to.

My suggestion... a first degree burn is unlikely to get infected, so the main thing is to keep it from hurting more than necessary. Covering it with a bandage will, in addition to keeping it clean, keep it from rubbing up against things, which would hurt. Putting an disinfectant cream with a pain reliever in it will help (so things like Neosporin Plus). Aloe would also help. If it's bothering you, you can also take an over the counter pain reliever (Tylenol, ibuprofen, etc.).

If it forms blisters, don't pop them. It will hurt, but more than that it leaves an open wound that's volunerable to infection.

If it looks like it's not healing properly then see a doctor, but I doubt that you'd get more than a first degree burn from touching a hot pan.

Running under cool water was right thing to do. And the recommendation is usually for cool water rather than lukewarm. Just for general reference, you should only run cool water over a burn if it's a first degree burn (and I think also second degree, but I'm not certain). If it's a third degree burn (recognizable by the presence of charred skin), or an electrical you're not supposed to run water over it. For severe burns, the layer of dead skin protects the fragile layers underneath, and would be washed away in water. Electrical burns involves nerve damage so cooling the burn might be painful and wouldn't accomplish much anyway. For either of those types of burns, you'd also want to get immediate medical attention.

Run it under cool running water for about 10-20 minutes or you can water in a bowl with ice added, (applying ice direct to the skin can cause ice burn).

If you have Silvazine cream (designed for burns and used in hospitals) apply a thin layer over burnt site.

If it blister DO NOT burst, or apply ANY OILY creams, as these will hold in the heat, and cause more pain.

See doctor if pain persists, or burn has a blister.

put some aloe on it. Unfortunately there isn't much to do for the pain but the cold water or some of that cold spray. Don't just put any cream on it because some can make it worse

I've used toothpaste to stop the pain, it helps even though it sounds weird. Make sure it's paste and not the gel.
