If somebody wanted to cross the Alantic from Britain to America or vice versa, travelling by ship, how would you arrange it? Are there any dedicated passenger liners still around, or would you have to hitch a lift on a freighter?

Most cruise lines still provide Trans-Atlantic crossings. Cunard and Holland America Line are two big providers. I would request information from the cruise lines. I can guarantee that the two I have listed have trans-atlantic sailings.

Cunard, now owned by Carnival still has ocean liners. These are not the same as cruise ships. The largest of these, Queen Mary 2 went on her maiden voyage in 2004. I believe the QE2 is also still in service.

you could do it on the QE2 or Queen Mary. They are VERY EXPENSIVE upscale luxury liners. They call them "crossings" not cruises.
