It will be possible when lnb technology (the part of the dish that receives the satellite signal bounced off of the dish) gets better, or when satellite power gets strong enough to not need a dish.

I don't think there will be a time when you won't have a dish or some other sort of antenna/signal receiving device. The signals are beamed from geosynchronous orbit aren't exactly super powerful. Even sat. Radio (xm or sirius) needs an antenna-- alebeit a small one.

Yes, local TV stations broadcast HDTV over the air. Over the air HD antennas are available most anywhere and can be mounted inside your attic, and as long as you live close enough to a metro area that has it's own local channels, you will be able to pick up TV in high definition.
