We take temperatures because this is one of the first signs that a patient has got an infection, also if they are having prescribed iv (intravenous) drugs or antibiotics if their temperature is high it is a warning that the drug disagrees which them, also if they are having a blood transfusion a high temperature indicates that they are having a reaction to the blood so we would discontinue it immediately

A higher or lower than normal body temperature can be one of the first signs that something is wrong. Just like a pain in your foot tells you that you stubbed your toe, a high temperature can tell you that your body is fighting a bug.
