Male is cheaper to neuter, shots and all the rest are about the same. Most breeders charge a bit less for males. However, males are my favorite as companions, and usually potty train easier.

You will need to have 3 puppy shots for protection against distemper and other diseases, and when it gets old enough it will need a rabies shot, and a license. Also it will need to be wormed probably and will need to get on heartworm preventative. All this depends on what is required/suggested where you live. As far as it being cheaper to get a male neutered or a female spayed. A straight forward procedure (with no complications) will be usually cheaper on a male because it is less invasive, their recovery time is shorter too.

When you go to look at the puppies if you choose one see if the people will let you take it to the vet within a certain amount of time and return it if it has health problems.Get it in writing. A new puppy check up even if its $40-50 bucks will be cheaper in the long run than buying a puppy with health problems and will save you and your girlfriend alot of heartache in the future.

It's cheaper to get a male fixed. The shots and checkups will cost the same. Male do tend to be larger and possibly eat a bit more. But, I still think males are cheaper.

In the spaying neutering department, a male is cheaper. In everything else, the amounts are the same.

You should call a veterinarian and get some estimates of their charges. There are office visits, vaccinations, spaying, heartworm and flea preventatives, heartworm testing, stool testing...the list goes on and on.

Figure on spending IMHO 3 to 4 hundred for the first visits and birth control. A bit more for a female.

Be sure your girlfriend can afford a pet before you get her one. It's a lifelong commitment (the animals lifespan). Good Luck.

Shots will be the same in price. I believe it is cheaper to get the male fixed than the female. When you go to pick it out look at how they react to you.

Before looking, consider adopting, if these dogs were bred, then the one you buy will take the life on one in a shelter :( A shelter also gives you their shots in the adoption price, and if old enough, their spay/neuter. A male dog is cheaper to fix, but not by much. A male will also bond better with your girlfriend. Please consider the animals at the shelter, there are small cute dogs there too!

get her a girl, she will love that! my boyfriend just got me a shih tzu for christmas (an early gift). its honestly about the same to get them spayed/nuterued. there is only like a $20 difference and its usually dont by the weight of the dog, so a small day is cheaper to fix than a big dog.

as for shots, they usually come with their first shots and dewormed... you will have to get their 2nd and 3rd at 9 and 12 weeks and they arent that expensive.

good luck!!!
