Then, if your dog has a problem chasing people or cars, set up a controlled situation outside. Get a friend to be the driver or runner (for the driver of a car, it's ESPECIALLY important - the person has to know the dog may be running after him so they can be very careful).

Use the same command on the dog after having the person go by. Again, start with the leash on first, and once the dog has got that down pat, try it without a leash.

Your dog will eventually learn the command. Use it before the dog actually starts going after something. If he starts looking at a car or a runner, say "halt" beforehand and you have a much better shot of getting the dog to do it. With small animals, it may be harder. You can't create a controlled situation. The one thing you can do, however, is introduce your dog to a cat in a situation where it is not running away. If the dog is unfamiliar with cats, bring one into the house in a cage. Let the dog sniff it and feel it out. The dog will be much less likely to injure a cat it is chasing if it views it as a game instead of hunting, and if it gets used to cats it won't think of them as prey.

Get him to puppy training classes fast, he chould have learned the recall indoors and in your garden before you ever let him start this habit.
Its a very exciting hobby for him and its gong to be a tough one to break. The basic technique other than the obediance training that you as a good owner are going to do - aren't you - is the car has to bite back and give him a nasty shock.
So get a mate to drive by, you have him on a long lead to stop him getting run over, and your mate pulls up and chucks a bucket of water over him.
You then straight away call your dog and reward him for coming to you. You don't punish him, you are the good guy. You become his safety zone.
Your mate should drive off and not talk to or fuss the dog.

You may have to always keep him on a leash or fenced in outside. Jack Russells are very hyper and it's still a puppy!

Please keep him on a leash or in the backyard.

This could only end in disaster. It sounds like the puppy in him and from what I hear jack russels are crazy until their at least 2.

jack Russel's are very hyper you need a fence that goes way down in the grown.but then again there diggers.so maybe a leash .and for the jerk that said let her get hit .its not funny my dog got hit last week and died.she got out of the fence.

jack russells will run where their nose takes them. they are tempermental and if you dont nip bad behavior in the bud now it will get worse as they age.

I have one and we have to cage him, house him or leave him on a generous leash.

puppies do well in a small kennel or cage during the day while you are getting them trained for the bathroom and their meals. as they get older you can leave them to the house---mine knows his boundries very well now.

they are a very smart breed of dog and will figure out ways to go around the barriers that you have placed for him/her. so you have to be on your constant guard for the first few months.

I would not trade mine for anything, its the koolest dog I have ever owned...

Good luck

my dogs the same !
u just have to take it on a harness { best with muzzle they cant pull} on walks alot toget it used to the noise, tell him/her no or heel when she tries to get to them and use a dog clicker { info at any pet store} and treats and award when a car comes past and nothing happens and if it has a long walk with no trouble show lots of praise and attention.
hope that helps!good luck with your puppy !

I am use to the old school ways, but try watching The Dog Whisperer, It might be for the best rather than punching it in the face(jj)

Your puppy screams? I'd keep him inside if I were you.
