I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, and I intend on doing much off-roading, and other winch involving activities such as boating. My friends say the capacity should be at least 6000 rolling pounds and 2000 straight pulling pounds. I think more. Any suggestions? Anyone have a winch they are selling???

Like said before, the general rule is 1.5 times your rig's gross weight. A 9500 pounder would be the absolute max you'll need. An 8000 pound winch will do just fine. While it's true that getting unstuck can call for more than a single line pull from an 8000, all you need is a snatch block, and you'll double your pull capacity. A 10K winch may sound great, but the weight is going to become a factor hanging off of the front of such a lightweight 4x4 as yours. You don't want to hang any more weight off the front bumper than necessary. A 10K also has less line to work with than an 8 or 9.5K.

Don't wimp out on brands. You will regret it if you buy some el-cheapo no-name Chinese winch that cooks itself the first time you put a real load to it! Get a good one such as a Warn, Ramsey, or Mile Marker.

The stronger the better but as a min. I would say 10,000 lbs. You've got to figure in mud witch well swallow your trucks tires >Your truck now weight 3 to 4 times what it did a 6000 lbs winch won't cut it. Yes it s a big price jump but in the middle of no where who going to listen to you ***** at you self for saving a couple of bucks. Good luck a happy off roading . Maybe see you on the trails some day. Look for a purple Toy on 44s with a tuned port 350 and lots of other goodies .

as a rule of thumb look for a winch that is capable of pulling 1.5 times the weight of your jeep. that will help to take into account being mired in etc. i think an 8k pound winch should be quite sufficient for your needs

If you spend the extra money on the best one they got you can't go wrong. Plus the good ones look cooler.
