Right now we have lots of soldiers, airmen and surface ships involved in Iraq, so what the heck are the "sun dodgers" in our submarines ?

I am sure that they are still performing a role, but what is it ?

There is a reason the Submarine arm of the US Navy is called the "Silent Service"

US Submarine operations are highly classified for the most part so you are NOT going to hear about them on the evening news or read about them in the morning paper.

Based on standard ops... there should be one or two accompanying each Carrier Battle group and probably several more on independant operations of a classified nature. (Probably standing off current world hotspots ready to fire tomahawk cruise missiles)
The rest are in port or just offshore in US Navy training areas doing workup training for future deployments.

Your comments seem to be disparaging the Submarine force as not doing their share in Iraq. What the hell do you expect a sub to do in a nearly landlocked desert country!?!?!? sheesh! just think a sec before popping off at the mouth.

My colleagues in the U.S. Navy that happen to be in submarines are supporting the war in Iraq to a certain degree (a few subs are supporting the rest of the fleet in the Persian Gulf), but most of them are doing what they normally do in peacetime -- training for combat or contingency operations. They're still supporting NATO forces and they're still protecting the continental U.S., so don't think they're just sitting around playing cards all day while the ground-pounders are getting shot at in the Middle East.

Subs basically come in 2 types: the fast attack and the ballistic missile subs. The ballistic missile subs are our nuclear missile submarines and form the most reliable part of the US nuclear deterrence triad consisting of subs, ground based missile silos, and the Air Force's long range bombers. These subs jobs are to patrol the ocean and stay hidden so if nuclear war starts we will have missiles in a place where they cannot be destroyed. The fast attack subs on the other hand are being used for electronic surveillance and reconnaissance and can also be used to launch tomahawk cruise missiles at pre targeted locations.

Most of what the US subs are doing is classified information. If you want to know more, Ask a Navy recruiter.

Probably something that is classified. We are not supposed to know everything that the military is doing - that sort of defeats any element of surprise that they could get, wouldn't you say?

Stalking, and waiting to strike.

It's inevitible that the US Navy is going to go at it with the Chinese navy (such as it is), and most likely will destroy it as it did the Japanese navy in WWII.
