My heater worked fine until about 1 week ago, then it started going from hot to blowing luke warm or cold air. If I waited a while, it might start blowing hot again. Today, my gauge started going bonkers, normal to hot and back, cycling through this way about every minute or two. The fan seems to be coming on fine. It will run hot or normal regardless of whether I'm going 60 down the highway or idling at a red light. Thermostat problem?

yeah, unfortunately, with a real nasty sounding knock, chances are, it's a serious engine problem. But first... Are you positive it's the engine? I know that sounds dumb, but have you popped the hood and actually sought where the noise is coming from? Try that. You'd be surprised how many people think their engine is going when all they did was forget to secure the thing that holds the hood up. It could be anything under there, so give it a once over. If it turns out that it's still the engine, try some Lucas oil treatment. It's in a white bottle and is very thick. Pour it in where your oil goes and it should quiet it up for the time being. If the mechanic is telling you that it's in need of an engine rebuild, make sure to get that statement backed up independently by other mechanics. An engine rebuild/transplant for that car will not be a cheap operation.

Sounds like you have this one nailed. It does sound like a thermostat problem. You should try checking your coolant level first. As for the gauge going bonko, the thermostat has nothing to do with that, it gets it's signal from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor, It may be acting wierd because you don't have enough coolant, and it is just splashing the sensor once in a while.

You have an air pocket in your engine and heater now you need to make the radatator cap higher than the bottom of the windshield and place a tight fitting funnel in the radatior cap area and fill above the heater core and allow the system to burp out the bubbles. Correct oil changes and carefull inspection of the coolant overflow bottle make all the difference. Also replace the radatior cap now. It is about time to get a coolant flush at your Nissan Dealer then you can say they caused this condition.

Sounds like the thermostat is going, so you need to replace. Hope that fixes your problem. The thermostat is supposed to maintain an even engine temperature of about 190F or so. As this also enables your computer controls to work properly.

The thermostat could be sticking open/shut/halfway open, or a sensor (ususally located just as the fluid enters/exits the radiator) went bad.
