The neck contains the seven cervical vertebrae that descend from the skull to the shoulders, becoming larger as they move downward. Cervical is the Latin word for neck. Next comes the thoracic or upper and middle part of the spine, and it contains twelve thoracic vertebrae, moving down from the shoulder to the end of the rib cage. The lower back contains the five lumbar vertebrae, which continue from the ribs to the hips. Lumbar pertains to the loins, and these five lumbar vertebrae are the most substantial in the spinal cavity. Five additional vertebrae fuse together to make up the sacrum, which is held between the iliac bones of the pelvis on either side, forming the sacroiliac joints. Back problems frequently occur where the lumbar spine connects to the sacrum. Below the sacrum sits the coccyx or tailbone, consisting of four and sometimes five small vertebrae. According to one source, "coccyx" means cuckoo, because this part of the spine resembles a bird's bill.
