Wow, going through something of almost the same nature. Sweet, nerdry, quiet, unassuming guy I am interested in. I found out his days off, so I will text him, wishing him a good day off.
I got him a christmas present when I was out of town. It was one of those, when I saw it, I had to get it for him, it screamed his name, and it gave me an excuse to see him.
If you see something that you know he will like, that screams his name, get it for him. But, only if you know he will truly appreciate it. My friend did, he said he had actually been looking for something just like that, and I saved him time.
Next time you talk to him, ask him to meet you for some coffee. Be honest, but subtle. Tell him you enjoy his company, and intellectual conversation, and value your friendship.
You are going to have to start back on touchy ground, considering you dated him once before, the only thing is, y'all know each other a bit, so that is an advantage, or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it.
I am not sure how up-front you are about things. When it's a movie I know he's interested in, I ask him point-blank, hey, this movie is coming out, wanna catch it with me? Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't, but.
Don't know if this helped you any, or not, but, hope you all the luck!

I should start by chatting to him about his work, then go onto talking about films, then just ask if he`d like to go see a film with you as you don`t like going on your own.

Why not just come right out and ask? It sounds like you already know each other, so it shouldn't be awkward for you to be straight foward.
