I have a relative who is getting married and wants to wear her mother's emerald ring on her wedding day. Should she wear it on her right hand, her engagement ring on the left hand, and have the groom place the wedding band on top of the engagement ring? Or, should she just not wear her engagement ring at all?

If she wants to wear her mothers ring then she should wear it on her right hand and through my experiences with weddings some brides give their engagement rings to the maid-of-honor until the ceremony is over that way the groom can put the band on her finger properly. The band is supposed to go before the engagement ring because it goes closest to your heart.

Many times the engagement ring and wedding ring are soldered together a few days/weeks prior to the wedding. If this is the case, then it won't be an issue. The mother's ring goes on the right had and the wedding rings go on the left. Otherwise, you can wear the engagement ring and have the groom add the wedding band to it. I doubt the congregation at the wedding will notice or care which ring is on top or bottom. Just discreetly switch them after the ceremony and you will be all set.

Well technically she can do whatever she likes-- there are only ring TRADITIONS, not rules.

Usually any rings that indicate romantic attachments go on the left hand ring finger. Non- romantic rings usually go on right hand, so that's where I'd suggest her mother's ring go.

The wedding ring goes on left ring finger FIRST, so as to be "closest to her heart." If she wants to wear engagement ring at the same time, it goes on that same finger, second.

Before the wedding ring is given on wedding day, she can either wear the engagement ring on her right hand, OR wear it on left hand then remove it then put it back on after wedding band, OR wear it on a different left hand finger, OR have groom put both on her hand, wedding ring first. However they want to go about it.

She should wear both those rings on her right hand; the hand the wedding band will go on should be bare. After the ceremony, she can put her engagement ring over top of the wedding band.

She should wear her mom's ring on her right hand. She should remove her engagement ring and give it to her ring bearer or the best man or her maid of honor. The wedding band is supposed to be closest to the heart. So when you think about that, picture her arm hanging down the left side of her body. And from where the wedding ring is you go up until you are up to the left side of her chest, thus being the closest to her heart. I always think it's taboo to remove your wedding band. But ya have to be realistic. There will be times when you need to clean your wedding band. So, as long as it gets put back where it belongs, it's o.k......that's just my opinion. But the wedding band goes on first , then the kiss, then the engagement ring. I hope I have been of some help. I wish the lucky couple long life , long love , and happiness. GBU

I would wear the emerald on my right hand and put the engagement ring out of service for the day.

Actually, when I got married, I slipped my engagement ring off right before the vows and handed it to my maid of honor. I put it back on after the wedding ceremony.

well she can wear her mother;s emerald ring instead of the engagement ring and have the groom place the wedding band on top of it, left hand.
or she can also wear the ring on her right hand and leave the traditional rings on the left hand.
she should also speak with her finacee and see what his reaction would be for the replacement of the engagement ring if she decides to go that route.

I'd say the emerald on the right, for sure. As for the engagement ring, I'm sure they've had them fitted, so I'd say the groom puts the wedding ring on top of the engagement ring.

The engagement ring is worn on the right ring finger until after the ring exchange. Then the engagement ring is placed over the wedding ring.

But if your friend wants to wear her mother's ring, then she could eliminate the engagnement ring altogether or wear both on her right hand. It will probably go undetected until the picture closeups & by then, she will have put her engagement ring back on the correct finger.

She has the choice of wearing it around her neck or on her right hand.If she chooses to wear it on her right hand, have the engagement either tucked away in a safe place or have it for the groom to put on after the wedding band.
