We always just went straight to underwear. Because then when an accident happens its not like having the diaper on again where messing your pants doesnt matter because mom will clean it.
It can also help too if you leave the door open whenever you're in the potty, and talk to him about how you had to go potty, so you went really fast to the bathroom to make sure you didnt wet yourself.
And let him see the whole process from start to finish, in the sense that, you're doing your daily thing, and announce to him, "boy! I feel like I have to pee! i better hurry to the potty!" And then hurry in and go potty, leaving the door open. He wont follow you at first, but eventually he will, toddlers do that.
The hardest part of potty training for toddlers is reconzing that the urge to pee demands a course of action. Up to this point he's always been able to just automatically relieve himself without thinking about it. Now he has to put two and two together and realize that a covered bottom doesnt mean a diaper. If he can see you reconize the need, and see you take the proper course of action, he can apply it in his own little life.
Its been sucessful for me through many a pottying training. Especially for boys. And especially when coupled with telling him how gonig potty makes him just like a big grown up man, and you're so proud of him being so grown up and going potty in the potty, and you just know he's so big. Boys love that.

I would skip pull ups. I have a 2 1/2 yr. old and switched babysitters and he start potty training and they do not use pull ups he wears his underware all day long until nap time he wears a diaper. They have a system that they set a kitchen timer and they try to potty every hour. It is working great! If he has a pull up on or a diaper he will not use the potty chair he will go in the diaper. So he wears underpants durning the day and diaper at nap or bedtime. I have also started cutting his drinking time an hour before bed so that he will soon be wearing underpants to bed too! Good luck!

Yes!!! I have a 4yr old little boy and potty training was a breeze with the pull ups. If you keep a diaper on then they tend to get confused or become lazy when playing and such and tend to not go on purpose. But, with a pull up they understand better and are easily adapted when it is time for underwear. He has already shown interest in using the potty, so he is ready for big boy pants.

Yes, I would buy pull ups right away so he knows he's a big boy. It might give him a little inspiration. Atleast let him try them during the day until he gets the hang of it.
Just a little tip that worked for me.
~ I had a hard time getting my son to go potty so I bought a chair that played music when he went potty, it came with a reward board with stickers and when it got filled up we took him to chuck e cheese. That finally worked. GoodLuck

Pull ups slow the process because they are only slightly different than diapers. Save the aggrivation and money and get plastic training pants. after using these for a couple weeks get underwear with his favorite charactors on them. When he goes in the undies make sure he know that means he has to throw them away. He'll try extra hard since he doesn't want to throw away his Car's, or thomas the train underwear.
Good luck.

my little girl is going through the exact same thing right now. She can walk around all day stark naked and go to the potty all day long and not have any accidents. I found that if you stress to her that he pullups are panties and not diapers then she'll do pretty good. Try to find a character on the pullups that he likes. My little girl like her Dora "Panties"!

I would get pull-ups just in case. Tell him that they are like underware, but that if he has an accident in them, it'll be easy to clean up like diapers. Once you notice that he doesnt go in the pull-ups anymore, then its time for big boy underware. Less mess for you if you use the pull-ups, especially if your out with him and dont want him in diapers.

pullups are the same as diapers... there really is no "wet" feeling to reinforce training.
the thick cotton trainers worked the best for all 4 of my kids, understanding that there will be accidents and each child is completely different! those old fashioned diaper covers keep any leaks from escaping.
good luck!

To tell you the truth Pull Ups just slow things down. You want him to get out of diapers but you're putting him in something that looks just like a diaper. It just confuses the issue for him. Just put him in regular underwear. Let him pick them out so he will be excited to use them and tell him if he pees/poops in them then he can't wear them anymore.
