Go in your bathroom and take the lid off of the toilet tank, there you will see a float switch (a floating ball attached to a switch at the other end) that switches the water on and off. A picture is worth a thousand words...

a float switch is an electrical switch that turns ON or OFF when the liquid level reaches it

It is a switch that is set on (or off) by a float that rises in a liquid. Like the float in a sump pump that clicks on the pump.

levels of water in a tank are monitored by flat switches. they hang until they start to float and tip at 90 degrees switching on/ off a pump.

A bouyant device that rests on top of a liquid, typically, and as the level rises and moves this device, it sets off the switch contacts...eg. a mercury switch, when lifted, will roll the mercury from the bottom to "short" out the switch contacts
and close your circuit...
