Yep. Before he founded the mormon church, he was arrested and convicted of fraud (in 1826) -- for having a "magic stone" that, when placed into a hat and stared at, would let him look "through the earth" and see where gold was buried.
Amazingly similar to his tale of finding "gold plates buried" later on, and using "the urim and thummim" (magic stones) to translate them...:)

That was actually just the Southpark take, as far as I know. Quite funny, and it demonstrated the point. But I don't think he actually stuck his face in the hat, though... :) (He put his face in his hat, where his translation stones were, so he could dictate the book of Mormon :)

He couldn't let ol' what's his name doing the transcriptions see that there wasn't actually any plates. So, he pretended that they were in a hat so that he could see them in total darkness.
