Catholics disobey Matthew 23:9
"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven."
Catholics also pary to dead saints and mary to intercede for them. The Bible says not to do this.
You shall have no other Gods before me.!
You shall not committ idoltary.
Catholics also beleive in salvation through works. It contradicts the Bible.
5However, to the man who does not work but trusts God who justifies the wicked, his faith is credited as righteousness. 6David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
7"Blessed are they
whose transgressions are forgiven,
whose sins are covered. Romans 4:5-7
Catholics also beleive the pope is head of the church. This is wrong only Christ is head of the Church.
The pope and his minions teach a false docrtine that isn't Biblical. They have add stuff to suit their purposes.
I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. Revelation 22:18
And the LORD said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in My name. I have not sent them, commanded them, nor spoken to them; they prophesy to you a false vision, divination, a worthless thing, and the deceit of their heart. Jeremiah 14:14
6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. Galations 1:6-9
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them. 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matthew 7:15-23

At first, there were no distinction between Christians and Catholics. Distinctions were made during the Protestant movements in the 16th or 17th century by Martin Luther, King Henry the VIII and John Calvin.
There were also abuses in the church why this happened.
But best of all, these leaders wanted to be saved by their faiths by making their own rules outside the Vatican.
Be forewarned for Christ also said, "Not all who preach in my name shall be saved." Because religious groups are only using the name of Christ to enrich themselves and by twisting and bending the laws and the commandments
to attract more followers who are gullible..

Catholics are a subset of Christians. It's one of the older denomonations. It was the Catholic church behind the Spanish Inquisition and the Crusades.
When I was a kid in the '60's we were taught that only Catholics can go to heaven but they can't get away with that kind of arrogance anymore.

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us." (Pope John XXIII)
Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians.
Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):
By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works.
There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much.
A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor.
With love in Christ.

First of all catholics are christians. If you read good sources on early christians or early church history you will find that catholic church is the early christian/church.
Secondly, I can't decisively define differences between the two groups (if that what you meant) because there have been over 25.000 denominations within the protestanism since what so-called the reformation in 1600s (See the history of reformation-Martin Luther, Calvin, etc). All these denominations have called themselves Christians; however, in terms of doctrines/decisions on what to believe some of them are really different from one to another compared to catholicism and protestanism, by and large.
I suggest that you use Protestanism and Catholicism for your question because that may help catholics, like myself, to define the differences. After all, there is a history that bases the differences, though. One obvious difference in doctrine, for example, is the doctrine of salvation. Marthin Luther/Protestanism and almost all today's denomination/non-catholic believe in sola fide (faith alone). It means that if you have faith in jesus christ "only/alone" you will be saved regardless of what and how much you have sinned. Cathoilcs believe that faith alone cannot guarantee your salvation, but faith and works. Catholics believe that your faith has to be shown in your deeds or good works too. So, if you've sinned you have to repent and this repentance has to be shown through, for example, act of contrition, confessing your sins to a priest through the Sacrament of reconciliation/forgiveness, and do charities.
It seems you have several issues to ask about catholic doctrines. I suggest you to visit this site www.chnetwork.org where you can post any kind of your confusions about the church's teaching. I bet there are experts who can answer your questions which are biblical, historical, and theological. It seems I am sure about this. Yes, I am. First, of all it's because the church has stood strong agains heresies, reformation, moral issues since the early lives of the diciples who maintained the church of christ. Secondly. the catholic church has been given the authority by Jesus Christ to teach catholics/christians in terms of faith and morals.

Christians believe we are saved by faith alone in what Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross. Catholics believe it takes that and more... sacrements.
