The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a separate breed from the American Pit Bull Terrier. Pitbulls are illegal to own in the UK, Staffies are not. For this reason, those illegally owning pitbulls there will call them Staffies/American Staffies in an attempt to avoid prosecution for keeping or selling them. Staffies are in the same group, just like a Bassett is in the same family as a Bloodhound, but they are not the same, just share certain characteristics.

American Pit Bull Terrier
American Staffordshire Terrier
Staffordshire Terrier

"pit bull" is a generic name that is comprised of several breeds with similar characteristics. "Pit bull" itself is not a breed.

Hope this helps!
