I am writing a paper on the Deaf culture, sign language, technology for the deaf, etc. I want this paper to be as informative as possible. What would interest you in the paper?

I myself am Deaf, and I think that it would be good to do a paper on how there IS such a thing as Deaf Culture, that the Deaf do not think of themselves as particularly disabled, but that we are a unique cultural group, with our own societal norms and language, different from that of hearing people. Many people think that we are "just deaf", not realizing that there is an entire culture involved, with taboos and a value system that is unique unto itself. Maybe also dispel some of the myths, such as "All Deaf can read lips", "Deaf people can't talk", "Deaf people are quiet" (!) "Deaf people can't do alot of things."

I am interested to know about reading aquisition skills in the deaf population (especially those who only use ASL). It has been said that the average deaf person has only a 4th grade reading level. I know part of this is due to the gap between the two languages (ASL doesn't have a written form). So, my question is when Deaf people are reading, do they sound out the words like hearing children are taught to do. When they see a word, do they think of it in terms of a visual sign? What are some of the other concerns when it comes to literacy in the Deaf community.

In adding to Gumbi's answer (because it's a very good one - I would choose it for a Best Answer!) here are a few more topics to cover:

What sort of technology is currently being developed to advance Deaf communications?
Is it rude to sign with your mouth full? (I've always wondered this!)
About how many Deaf people are there in the world today?
How do Deaf people relate to hearing impaired people?

Where I could take classes, how to get certified, how to help, etc. would be what I would most want to know. Also, famous deaf people, anything about Galludet College, the issues facing the students there and in the working/every day world. Good topic you chose!
