Well, my friend wants to find a way to get out of the army before he heads off to basic training in May.

He joined withtout much thought about it, and he is graduating college this May.

He really wants to join the peace corps for awhile,

when he gets back, he said he is thinking that he wants to serve in the Air National Guard instead.

First he needs to find his way out, then after a few years, (after his little peace corps thing) he is thinking ANG,

Will they even accept him? or want him?

what are his chances?

They may or may not depending on the climate and the time and the need for manpower. He should go talk to a National Guard recruiter right now. My experience is that the Guard recruiters tend to stay in one place much longer and are more likely to shoot straight with a recruit because they will probably see him again, many times, after basic.

I'm guessing that your friend has signed a contract but hasn't taken the oath. If that is the case there might not be any "discharge" at all. The active duty recruiter will probably play hardball because his goal is to get your friend to ship. But his bark may be a lot worse than the bite he has available.

Has your friend really checked into the entrance requirements for the peace corps. He should make sure that is a real option. Also, he might be more valuable to them after an active duty tour where is has learned to live in spartan conditions.

If you already signed up for the army, you're stuck. There is NO out.
