If you are measuring to use a formula to estimate the weight or for a trophy to be mounted the fish should be measured from the tip of a closed mouth to the longest point of the tail (Squeezed together or turned down depending on the species), get the girth (measurement around the stomach at the dorsal fin and take a picture for reference in size and color scheme. If you have a scale that will weigh the fish use it. If you do not have a scale you cna estimate the weight by size and feel or use a formula to get you close to the actual weight. No single formula will work on all species of fish make sure the formula is species specific.
I hope this answers your question.
Good Luck and Tight Lines.

For starters, you always measure with the left side of the fish on the bottom. This is the proper way to do it professionally and Fishery biologist do it this way. Now there are several ways of measuring. There is total length, fork llength and caudal length.

Total length is from the tip of the nose to the end of the tail when it is pinched together.

Fork length is from the tip of the nose to the middle of the tail where it is the shortest.

Caudal length(believe thats what its called don't usually use this one) is from the tip of the nose to the caudal bone right before the tail fin.

Thats how to figure out the length of the fish. The other way is just to weigh it.

Hope that helps

why are you screaming? that is really very bad form. all caps represent screaming or shouting and as such is offensive to many, me included. aside from that you've answered your own question.
