Well he joied the army national guards. He told me he did it on a whim. He went through MEPS, and was sworn in, he is graduating in May, and going to basic training in late May.

Is it to late for him? can he get out? (before basic training?)

how would he do this?

I don't think he can get out now. He needs to talk with a recruiter to make sure though.

The answer to the question is largely, no. He signed a contract with the NG, and by law, a contract is a contract. The only time I've seen people get out before the terms of their contract are up is during basic training. If a person gets injured severly enough to the point where they unfit for duty, they can get a medical discharge. Also if a person in unable to adapt to military life, they can get an Entry Level Seperation (ELS). Other than that, he's in for the long haul.

I know that at least in the AF (which I am in) you can go through bsaic and say that military life is not for you as long as he says this b4 6 months. Now he has to remember national guard is only a weekend a month and 2 weeks a year is not that big of a commitment. His best bet is going to talk to the recuriter or someone in ARMY to best discuss his options. Tell him to stick it out; that its not that bad. And benefits are GREAT.

ALSO YOU GET SWORN IN UNLESS YOU ARE ACTUALLY ABOUT TO GET ON THE BUS TO GO TO BASIC.

He should live up to his word and serve as he swore an oath to do. The NG isn't nearly as demanding as the regular Army is anyways. There are ways to get out, but he can figure it out for himself and maybe in the process will change his mind.

I think that if they offered him a spacific job that he could use in civilian life , and they did not comply with that offer and assigned him to something else, he could back out. He can't back out because it's getting hot and heavy in Iraq. they can assigne him to a mailman's job and have him deliver mail to the frontline troops. I don't really know? I was Drafted.

He took the oath - He is screwed. I am sure there is some way he can get out, but it will leave him a less than honorable discharge.

If he's drilled at all, and thus gotten paid, I don't see a way out for him. If he's received no monetary compensation, he can refuse to ship, and nothing will happen to him, but I wouldn't suggest it.
