Contact them and explain. They do have discretion on some of the charges they apply for late payment, and ifyou explain the situation, they can be surprisingly helpful. It's better than claiming the dog ate your homework, or some other excuse they've heard a million times before.

Excuses will get you no where. Contact them and discuss the problem with them before the money is due. They maybe able to sort out some kind of payment programme with them but you may still have to pay any late payment charges that might apply.

No you will not be able to get an extension as this is a non negotiatable deadline for the entire population.
However, you can arrange to pay by direct debit a monthly amount to spread the tax over the year to help meet the payments as they become due. This will help you avoid the same situation next year.

there are about 3 valid reasons for not submitting your tax return or not paying taxes on time so unless you fall under one of them then you will incur interest and penalties. if you havent paid by 28 feb then you will incur a 5% surcharge of the tax liability plus interest. if you can afford this extra by march then just hold off til then. even if you contact them, they will still charge the interest into the monthly payments if you agree a repayment plan. the interest will run from the due date. ie 31st jan.

Ask em. They are usually fairly decent. At the end of the day it is a job to them not THEIR money.
