Here is a transcript from a newspaper article on tattoos dated in 1899. Funny how many journalists and others are still saying the same thing now about tattoos being a fad...

I dont necesarilly think its a "fad". I mean if you think about it tattoos have been around for a long time. The indians would have them and as the ages past it just the different kind of art work. You have the usual barb wire...which personally..people need to get over that cuz you see it on ever other person. I dont think tattoos will ever go away. Hell even prisons cant help ppl from getting tattoos. Its pretty much the different designs that ppl get. The usual stuff.

I've been trying to figure out some people's logic in that. My tattoos are in no way fads if they are all custom pieces of artwork that cater to my exact feelings, expression and tastes. I get them for me, not because my friends all did it, I should do it too.
Tattoos have been around for hundreds of years, I hardly believe that is a fad. I think people who say that they are fads don't appreciate the artistry and skill involved. They just frown upon it because they wouldn't do it themselves or because they got an average tattoo that meant nothing and is flash work, so now all they do it b*tch about how bad they must be.

They aren't a fad. I think people misinterpret that because there are mainstream venues to promote and educate about tattoos now and so when it is out there, people latch onto it. I was into tattoos and body mods long before this whole thing of Miami Ink, Inked, actors and actresses showing them off on tv, etc began.
Many cultures use tattoos as a sign of growing up, for religious purposes and whatnot. They have been around since the dawn of time.
I know where you are coming from though cause I have read your answers to other questions. I think people are just biased.

i don't believe tattooing is a fad per se, but there are trends within tattooing that i think are fads. i think barbed wire arm bands and butterflies were the 90's "fad" and now in the 2000's it's skulls and crossbones, nautical stars, and people trying to be all rockabilly-like when they really aren't. and ten years from now, there will be a new tattooing fad for the newer generation.

some tattoo styles are a fad. like tribal tattoos, 10 years ago when a lot of people got tribal tattoos because it was the cool thing to do. but i don't think all tattoos are fads. some people enjoy the art of tattoo and admire them for how skillful the tattooer is and they are proud to own someone's personal expression of art on skin. that's how i feel about it.
also, i am a young person and i have never gotten a tattoo to rebel or to make a statement or to be different or to do anything other than love my tattoo. love the art and be proud of it.

OK I m sorry I used the wrong wording.A fad is something that passes with time, obviously tattooing has been around for a very long time.I guess I meant to say that to many young people are using this permanent form of marking themselves to make a statement about one thing or another.Don't get me wrong again, older and middle age people do it also. But there is a rise in the number of youths who do it.

Some tattoos are a fad. Like all those guys in raised trucks who drive around in wife beaters and red baseball hats worn backwards with a celtic or tribal band on their bicep. You know they cried like a baby when they were alone. So those are fads. Oh and those slutty girls who get butterflies above their coin slot.
Haha did my emails get you goin?

If it is a prevailing mode of expression that has risen dramatically in popularity then fades away just as quickly. It generally will change much more quickly than the culture as a whole and will not become accepted by the culture as a whole.
Probably more accurate to classify them as a sub-culture fashion and not a fad.

A "fad" is something that is popular for a period of time, and then its popularity fades over time.
Tattoos can be a fad, but a tattoo is permanent.
