When a car is reported stolen, it is entered into a computer data base that is country wide. If the stolen car is pulled over for a traffic stop, the license comes back to the dispatch,(or in car computer) as a "hit" for being stolen.

If you think you may know that your car is in another city, make sure you tell the police agency that you are filing the report with what city you think it is in. The data base can send priority routings to that paticular city.

If it is a paticularly large city, it will be difficult to locate, just on the sheer number of vehicles. I work in a county of just about 100,000 and our hot list is usually at least 50 cars long
