Rock-a-by baby,
On the tree top,
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock,
When the bow breaks,
The cradle will fall,
And down will come baby,
Cradle and all.

Does anybody know if this report is true?
Was the baby injured? It sounds like a hell of a fall!
Were the parents ever punished for such neglectful, even maliscious behaviour towards their own child?
Were social services called?
I mean, how can any just go around leaving innocent infants in places where they could very easily get hurt? It is just so cruel.
I'm really upset!
If anyone knows if the poor little mite survived, even if it was crippled for life, please, please let me know!

I don't know how the baby in this one is doing. But, seriously, what about the old lady who lived in a shoe? She had so many kids, she didn't know what to do. She should have thought about sterilization a long time ago. And maybe scraped together a down payment for a house. A shoe is no place to raise a family.

Thank you for bringing this matter to the fore.I have long regarded it as an appalling tale of woe.Whether there is any truth in this story I do not know. Most nursery rhymes have some hidden message. This particular one struck absolute terror into me as a child.I used to bawl my head off and worry myself daft about the baby.It was so bad my dad had to cut the page out of my nursery rhyme book.I consequentially never inflicted this particular gem on my own children. My mother tried to comfort me by saying the baby dropped in a nice bushy hedge and was unhurt. To this day I am not convinced this is true .The whole weight of the law should have been brought down on the perpetrators of this heinous crime.I feel however that the culprits are now long dead.I won't sleep now!!!!

Its a horrible song for children my son will climb any thing and every thing but not a tree. He tells me " I don't want to fall like the baby does in that song ". Its not true but how screwed up it would be if it was. Not good at all I don't see how it's an appropriate song for small children. I don't blame you for being upset I'm upset over it too.

I was the child you mentioned.
Yes it hurt but it wasn't my parents fault.
My older brother didn't like me so he stuck me up the tree, that night we had 100mph winds and the bow broke, i not only hit the floor, but i bounced up and through the window.
I then somersaulted 3 times and landed in the oven, which happened to be on at the time.
My mother luckily came down for her fix of gin and found me (well she smelt me cooking)
So she put me under the tap, and back in bed, 29 years later I'm just starting to get over it, well i was til you brought it up again, thanks!

It refers to the government of Pitt the younger. He was the baby and it was felt that his government would soon fall.
