Brushing and mouthwash do some good but can be no more than a bandaid on really bad breath. Good oral hygiene is required. Have you been to a dental hygienist lately? Make sure you do not have gum disease or decayed teeth. Better brushing and flossing help. An electric tooth brush will do a much better job than hand brushing for gum health and plaque removal. Antibiotics and antimicrobial mouthwashes like Peridex can kill bacteria causing gingivitis. Pay attention to the rear upper molars because food deposits can build up on the rear surfaces that can smell bad while it continue to decay. It is also impossible to see because tilting your head does not improve the angle of view and the decaying food has a coloration close to that of the tooth enamel.
If your teeth and gums are in great shape and that does not get rid of the problem there is one other source of bad breath that can be severe. If you still have your tonsils and you previously have had frequent bouts with tonsilitis (strep throat) then the tonsils can become pitted and scared. Those pits can collect chewed up food and then begin to decay inside the pits. You may not see the food easily but your tonsils will be larger than normal and usually a constant mild grade sore throat. Sometimes if you cough or sneeze , it will loosen a large chunk of this decayed food that you will wonder where it came from that has the same odor as your bad breath. Also with the tonsils being enlarged will also cause you to sleep with your mouth open thus oxygenating the mouth and making the bacteria flourish. That's why many people wake up with a coated tongue in the morning. Be careful if you try to remove the food from the pits and it may be stuck to the tissue or manual manipulation can damage the tissue and cause another bout of strep throat.
Unfortunately, the fix for this is not all that easy... a tonsilectomy and adenoid removal. Most insurances do not pay for elective surgeries..but hey I am only stating what causes it, not a cheap way to fix it.

Make sure to brush at least twice a day or more, most of bad breath comes from the back of your tounge. Either scrap with a toothbrush or buy a tounge scraper. Bad breathe also comes from things you eat so stay away from garlic, onions, fish and other stronge scented foods.

Brush your tongue with your toothbrush or a tongue scraper (plastic thing made for just this purpose) and make sure that you floss well. Do this every day. You can also be mindful of what you eat, but I'd rather brush my teeth more often than skip the onions.

Brush your tongue and also the roof of your mouth. A sour stomach can also cause bad breath, so use antacids if you get one. Use Altoids! Good luck!

go to the dentist and have them cleaned by a professional. there may be periodontitis that can cause breath to be putrid.
otherwise, floss and brush twice a day and use Listerine daily.

if u don't brush your tongue, do that. i find it easier to brush my tongue with a toothbrush than using those special tongue cleaners. also try using mints after you eat. i think the best mouthwashes are listerine and ACT for cavities.
