Preferably something with a decent zoom, depth of field, and something that fits well in my hands (not necessarily small, because small ones can be hard to capture the exact framing you're looking for).

Also, I'm looking at prices under $400.

Arigatou.

What size pix? Most 3mp cameras give good 4 x 6. For larger you need a larger mp- 5mp for 5 x 7, 6mp for 8 x 10.

If you want film quality, go to 8+mp SLR. They ain't cheap.

Get HP, Nikon, Kodak- good name, not cheapo.

Get SD/mmc memory card. SD will probably be the format of the future.

There are 2 cameras I will recommend. The Canon S3 IS and the Fujifilm S6500fd. Both are "DSLR-like" camera with 10 + times zoom. They both have their pros and cons. Here is the full review.

I'm satisfied with my Sony cyber-shot DSC-H2. It's 6 MP and 12X
optical zoom.
