Cats naturally like the tree - it is just a big toy to explore to them. Make the bottom of the tree cat friendly - soft ornaments, and no lights - give them a zone to play with.

Also - no tinsel at all in a house with cats - it can play havoc with their intestines if they eat it.

I'm getting a tree this weekend and will be coating the lower branches with the boundary spray I got from petsmart. It works well to keep them off of furniture. The only problem I see is that the spray is not pleasant to me either so for the skirt I plan on trying what I read at another site....

The following is a copy&paste from another site I plan on trying this weekend and putting it all over the tree skirt

"I was at my wit's end when I decided to try a little experiment...I took this citrus scented body spray I got as a gift one year (it smells very strongly of orange, grapefruit and lime), and sprayed the base of the tree, the bottom branches thoroughly, and around the rest of our christmas tree. As soon as I let him at the tree he sniffed around a little...and then walked away!! Ever since he sniffs the christmas tree and walks away... no more climbing, or chewing, and breaking ornaments :D
Basically, thanks for all the helpful tips, I would have never tried what I did unless I had read all those wonderful suggestions first!
Happy Holidays!"

I also found a list of ideas/options at wikihow and one of the things I will be modifying is I'm going to put a small hole in the ceiling and tie a piece of high stregnth fishing string to the top of the tree and then secure it to a piece of wood in the attic through the hole so the tree will be supported by the studs in the attic to prevent it from falling over.

My sources are listed below

I use a squirt bottle of water, IF I'm home. Other than that, I really dont know. Mine pulls the ornaments off the bottom and rolls them around the floor and I have to re-decorate the bottom of the tree every day.

The only thing I have ever had to do to keep them from climbing it and pretty much away from it is to keep a spray bottle with water handy and spray them when they are by it and or playing with the tree etc.
