The local hardware store will have a product called "Great Stuff" or something similar to it. It is an expanding foam that comes out of the can like mousse...and dries to a hard, weather resistant seal. It will expand to seal all of the nooks and crannies of the hole. HOWEVER...be careful and a little sparring. This stuff expands to about double the original amount as it dries. You can chisel off any excess using a putty knife and a hammer (it breaks away pretty easily) but it looks nicer if you don't have to do too much of that.
Follow this up with a call to the landlord...they will need to fix this so that the finished result is aesthetically pleasing (Great Stuff is a light yellow/orange/cream color).

The towel thing will work. The other thing you can if possible take a tarp or some kind of material that air does not travel through and pin or nail it to the outside and/or inside of the house over the airconditioning. Then let your landlord now that it needs fixed ASAP so that your heat bill does not go up.

Be careful! If you prevent him from being able have a pro fix it without undoing your work he might charge you for it. That said, you should be able to carefully spray some Great Stuff spray foam into the space and still leave room at the surfaces for patching. If the foam does come out a little, trim it back with a knife.

Go to your local Home Depot and tell them you need a can of Geat Stuff to seal an opening in your wall. They will know exactly which one you need(there are diffrent types of it)....just tell them the lenth and width of the slit. Although your landlord should get that fixed at no cost to you.

Have the landlord fix it so there are no questions.
An easy fix would be a can of expanding foam insulation; after it dries you could trim the excess.

If you have any kids, use one of them. Just don't let social services know.
