Yes, unless the letter is specific as to why you are breaking up with him. I know a guy whose gf broke up with him, but he could not get a straight answer from her for almost a year after! Ironically, it wasn't because of another guy.

Speaking from someone that did that I can tell that the it backfires on you very quickly.

I was in a 9 year relationship and I decided that I was going to write him a letter to tell him that I was leaving him. The reason I wanted the letter was that he had a lot of problems listening and I was hoping that if I wrote down what I wanted to tell him he would at least read it and then we could discuss it.

Unfortunately, he took it the VERY WRONG way and it ended up being yet another fight. If you want to write a letter I would suggesting doing it, but you need to be the one to read it to him. Face to face is still going to be ugly.. but its better in the long run cause it shows you at least put in the effort.

Good luck.. not fun either way.

PS. If you are doing it before xmas do not keep any presents he gets you.. thats just wrong and tacky... try to get out of your relationship with as much class as possible.

Well... it shows more respect for the person if you do it face to face. My suggestion would be to write it out beforehand, just to figure out what all you want to say and how to say it. But the actual break-up is probably a lot easier for the other person to take if it actually comes from you (especially if you know they still have feelings for you, or don't know the break up is coming). Breaking up by letter or on the phone is tempting since you don't have to face the other person, but it's taking the easy way out. If you've been dating them, especially for awhile, then you owe them more than that. I used a letter to break up with my first boyfriend, who didn't see it coming, and it really hurt him. Probably not the answer you're wanting to see, but this is just my opinion. Good luck.

It's just not personal enough. Basically, it might feel like you're saying that you want to break up so badly that you can't even stand to talk to them. If you're looking to save a lot of hurt feelings, this probably isn't the best way to go.

no but i do think that along with that letter you need to talk to him directly either that be on the phone or face to face.. otherwise yes just wrinting a letter and not explainging (over the phone or anything) would be cowardly
