when in fact he was an extreme liberal, espousing tolerance, charity, and almost always kept his company with the oppressed poor souls that right-wingers seem to want to shovel off to the north pole.

This is a great question. The answer is those of us who practice tolerance, love, and philanthropy don't need to scream aloud about our faith or the lack there of. Those who are afraid, ignorant, and destructive need something to believe in. Ignorance is a pandemic problem, people self medicate with religion, this provides an answer for the untempered mind. Most of them do not practice what they preach. Look at W. He is war mongering, yet claims Jesus Christ as his savor. The very man who said turn the other...etc. You get my point. People have a hard time being true to themselves. They feel as though they must be in a community of people who think the same way a they do. The put fish on their cars. Say that God has spoken to them. Lots of irrational things to make them fit in. All this does is make them feel worse, guilty, and unhappy. Any threat to this and they get overly confrontational. Just proving they don't have a Christan bone in there body. Excuse me Christ like bone in their body. They are all acting like Christians you know those people who invade countries, take away human rights, don't acknowledge the genocide in Sudan, and molest Congregational pages. They are sick people who need help.

What you perceive as the extreme right wing used to be considered middle-of-the-road. That is how far left the political spectrum has shifted.
I can remember back in 1968 the Democrat candidate for president was Hubert H. Humphrey. He was know as Mr. Liberal. Today, he would be considered a right wing extremist. He believed in the Second Amendment. I highly doubt that he would have been in favor of abortion and homosexuality.
If you know anything about history, you know that what a lot of people (maybe the majority) believe today would have shocked and scandalized people fifty years ago. Now ask yourself, were those people that wrong? Were they evil to have such beliefs?

Traditional Christian beliefs about such things as abortion and homosexuality are anathema to a lot of people today. A lot of people have never thought things out for themselves. Their opinions are based on what they have heard. Unfortunately, we have been fed a pack of lies.

The Christian religion requires obedience and belief without any proof based in reality. Extreme right wingers do not need any proof based in reality to believe in things either (WMDs anyone?). Both the Christian religion and right-wingdom seem to provide comfort in their followers. Both groups seem to believe that someone actually is looking out for them, and that they can safely suspend their rational abilities because something more powerful and intelligent will love and protect them if they only believe.,

Also, it might be that religion is a BIG money maker.

Fanatic Bible Nazis have more in common with right-wing political fanatics because both believe they are right and have a duty to see to it that everyone sees things their way or the highway. The Christ of the Bible Nazis only pays lip service to the poor and suffering. BIBLE NAZI - A fundamentalist christian who thinks it is a violation of their rights if they are denied the opportunity to use the coercive power of the state to shove their god down my throat

That's true, Jesus was an outcast and rebelled against the 'norm' of the society and religious authorities of his time. He was indeed a heretic of note.

If he ever did return as they preach, they'd be in for the Mother Of All Rude Awakenings.

They are just name droppers, they are trying to get votes and support for their ultra right wing neo nazi programs and they use and abuse the so called conservative Christian base to support them. They all forget.... Jesus was a liberal Jew.

See, this only shows misunderstanding on your part on two levels. One, I am as far to the "right" as a person can get, yet give to the poor and needy and worthy causes. I am not alone in this. Secondly, you misconstrue devoutly with vehemently. My devotion to God is not vehement, it is reverent. This calls me to care for my fellow man. Jesus loves you, so, so do I. Merry Christmas.

Because both xtians and far right wingers require a total disconnect in cognitive ability. Both rely on faulty logic and fear mongering to push their agenda.

Even His tolerance has limits. He was not very tolerant toward the Pharisees of His day. He referred to them as "you brood of vipers", among other things.
