You will not find that phrase in the scriptures. It refers to people who think they have to first clean things up in their life before they can come to God. (And usually they never do).

You will find the principle that you can come to God however you are, and he will accept you and clean you up from there. Look at Zaacheus who was a tax collector and a thief or the woman caught in adultery or the prostitute who came and anointed his feet. They all came "as they were", but they all left different.

There were others too who came to Jesus "as they were" - the Pharisees and other religious leaders. Only problem was, they left the same way.

What matters is not what you are like what you come to Jesus, but what you are like when you leave. You have to let him change your life through the new birth, That is all that matters.

I remember Billy Graham using the phrase, but it isn't from the bible.

i believe the gospels borrowed the line from the lyric in Kurt Cobain's song come as you are. No reason in particular, just a good song and catchy phrase.

I don't know, but parties are a lot more fun if you invite people to "come as you dare."
