How good does it work? Did you wake up better and was it easier to get out of bed?

I am thinking about buying one for my son for Christmas, since he has a hard time waking up. One thing I did notice from reviews on amazon.com and the manufacturers web site - you need to make sure you are buying version 2. The first ones made a hammer noise when the gong was hit.
There are not too many reviews out about these.

The zen alarm clock that I know has a little chime that starts ringing quietly and gets progressively higher in volume, until you shut it off.
I like it because it doesn't startle me and make me want to hide fro it .
