Yes a female can have a litter of puppies and they all can have different daddys. I watched a show on national geography that showed a litter of puppies still in the womb growing. And it said that the females eggs dont mature until a while after they reach the womb so when the dog breeds the sperm have to wait until the eggs are ready so that gives another male time to find her and breed her also. And thats another reason they lock together. I know someone who had a lab and they bred her to another lab not knowing this and she got with st. bernard cause some of the pups where labs the others looked like st. bernards. But it dont make the purebreeds mixed breeds though cause she can release 1-10 eggs or more depending on the breed. And each egg has to have its own sperm so u could have 1 mother with 10 puppies with 10 different daddys. Not likely though.

A dog can have a litter with more than one father although they can only breed to one male dog at a time. Cats are known for this also.

Yup! A dog I had as a kid, when we went to pick him out. Every single dog in the litter looked nothing alike. And I mean NOTHING! One was just like a yellow lab, one a German Sheppard, one like a Husky, one like a black lab, one like a border Collie and ours was like an over grown black lab with border collie markings.
Years later we took our dog back to the farm to see the mom and the pups they kept. And he was 60lbs heavier than the rest and like 10 inches taller. And he wasn't even overweight!
So yes it's very possible.

Sorry Shannon when I read your answer I laugh. Me, being an owner of a Shih Tzu.. I would have killed but still it is funny. To answer your question yes they can be more than one male father a litter. That is why my males are DNA.

Yes! In my Shih-Tzus last litter, she had 4 beautiful, long-haired lovely shih-tzu babies, and then out popped a pup that looked just like a rat terrier!
My in-laws have a rat terrier and we had let them house-sit for us one weekend. Didn't think they had brought their dog, but when they saw the pup, they admitted it.
So, yes, it can happen!

Abosolutely!
So professional breeders will purposefully breed two dogs to one female and do DNA testing on every pup & sire!
Crazy huh?
