The pain is located on the ball of my left foot and continues around to the top. The toes, heel and arch are not involved. If I push on the sides of the balls of my feet the pain is the worst. The pain is the worst in the middle of the night and keeps me awake. Even though I don't want to walk it seems to get better. This pain will last a couple of days and then go away only to come back, reasons unknown, in a week or so. Nothing I read about seems to identify my exact problem. The first time this pain occurred was in the middle of the night about a month ago and I thought I had broken my foot. It has since occurred two more times.

Sounds like gout.
U need to elevate the foot on edge of sofa if this happens.
Put a magnet in your shoes and see if that helps.
If all else fails, put feet on ice..instant relief in 10 min

If there is misalignment of the bones of the foot, there will be swelling in the capsule of that joint. Walking will allow some motion of the area and allow a subsiding of the immediate symptoms... When inactive again, the swelling builds up again..This becomes an inflammatory process which apparently will remiss for a short period of time but , will build up to create the symptoms again. Until those bones are returned to their normal position, you will have this chronic condition.

You may find relief by rolling your foot over a tennis ball or a bottle. Or, you could visit a doctor of Chiropractic and have the realignment accomplished for you. Don't over look the fact, the feet are the most used and abused parts of the body. Receiving the least amount of care.

Your joint might be out of place. Suggestion pull you foot out from your leg down and in all angles. I had this same problem for about 2 months until I got tired of the pain and did this. There was a pop and the pain went away within an hour. Has not come back. Causes can be impacts from landing on your feet from a high jump, landing on your feet at bad angles, kicking soccer balls etc...

Like the back of your hand... maybe it's called the back of your foot. You are talking about the top side between your leg and your toes???
