All of the major brands have their fans, and I have no doubt that they are all good cameras. The only camera available at the moment that I would stay away from is the Fuji S9500. I bought one and the photos are just not sharp and clear.
Take your time looking, they are getting better and cheaper as time goes by.
Optical zoom is the most important thing, get the most you can for your money.
Digital zoom is a complete waste of time, do not consider this as a factor when buying a camera. Once you have bought a camera, turn digital zoom off.
Get the most megapixels you can for your money.
As a very rough rule of thumb when comparing your final choices in camera, take the number of megapixels and multiply that by the amount of optical zoom. Buy the camera with the highest number.
Try to avoid a camera that uses two 'AA' batteries (except perhaps the Kodaks that can use the CR3 Lithium ion Battery Pack). Get a camera that either uses four, or one with its own dedicated Lithium Ion battery pack. (If you want to keep it for a long time, check the price and availability of replacement batteries. perhaps ebay?)

Canon SD 500, SD550, SD600 or any other Canon. They take great pictures and they are very compact. They fit you your pocket, and they have a good size screen on the back to view the pictures you take. I got mine off of QVC website. It cost me $250.00 for the Canon SD 550. The higher the mega pixel the better your photo as they get bigger. If you plan on printing 8x10 I would get a 6 mega pixel or better. If all you want is standard 4x6 4 mega pixel will do. The SD 550 is 7.1 and it takes excellent quality picture of any size.
I've tried Kodak and they weren't too bad either, but I got a Fuji and returned it the day I got it. If you go through QVC you have 30 days to return it if your not satisfied. They even include a return shipping label when you get you order. They make it really simple.

B & H Photo. If you live in NYC, go to their store and get the real experience. Or they are utterly reliable to order on-line www.bhphoto.com. Store is closed from Friday evening until Sat evening every week, and for Jewish holidays.
As far as camera is concerned, any Canon, Nikon or Olympus in your price line will be fine. You can research camera features and read reviews at www.dpreview.com or www.stevesdigicams.com.
You will not be able to get a new dslr for under $600 or $700 dollars.
Good luck!

Go to the B&H store in New York City. That store is huge and something to just go into a camera store that big. B&H is a reliable retailer and I have bought several items from them. Get one of the Canon SD camers such as the 600 or 630.

B&H in New York.
I live in California, and I still buy all my stuff from them.
The best cameras are Nikon & Canon (I own both).
You can't go wrong with either one, because they've been making cameras for ages, and their lenses are always good, if not excellent (for the more expensive ones).
There are lots of cameras that have good specs, but if you're shooting through coke-bottle glass, it doesn't matter how many megapixels you have.
