i can only answer from personal experience. my brother passed away almost 7yrs ago and over the years he's come to me in my dreams. normally it's to tell me he loves and misses me, or to give a message to someone else in our family; like around my dad's birthday he told me to tell my family hi and to tell dad happy birthday and that he loves and misses him. so to me it sounds like he was probably coming to tell you he loves and misses you or to give someone in your family a message.
