Cats sleep 75-80% of their lives. The cool thing about it is, that cats instinctivly sleep to rest for "the big hunt."
Cats are the only animal that most resemble their wild-life counterparts. (ex. Lions, Cheetahs, etc) They are natural hunters and rest so much, for hunting that may or may not ever happen.
Get your cat some toys, some things to climb on and string. The natural hunter will come out of them, and they will be fun again!

You said it is ONLY 4 years old so it is not due too old age.. I have never heard of a cat sleeping 22-23 hours a day... It could be depression.. You know..a cat.. or a dog.. or any pet wants to be loved.. wants to have attention.. Is anyone givng the poor kitty attention? This may be the problem.. Either someone should give it attention or get another kitty so it can have a companion

The cat is probably awake while you are sleeping. I doubt that it sleeps 22-23 hours a day, although it sure seems like it sometimes! Sometimes I wish I were a cat, like today, I'm kind of tired and it's gloomy outside.

Is he the only cat? My two cats sleep a lot, but they also play with each other constantly. They'll sleep for a while and Remy will decide he wants to play and start "pestering" Rowena until she pounces on him. Then they spend a good portion of the evening running up and down the cat tree. Neither of them are kittens - Remington is 8, Rowena is 4.

it could be a sign of an illness ... cats tend to sleep alot more then normal when they are sick it would be a good idea to go and take it to the vet and make sure that it is ok.
i have had many cats and those that got sick or where dying of old age slept more and more .

Cat's sleep on average 20 hours a day. Sounds like he's just a little above average to me. Also, as cats get older, they tend to get less playful.

Some animals just prefer to sleep more. Plus, he could be active during the nighttime when you are sleeping (like my cat is), or when you are not home. Just because you never see him do anything but sleep, doesn't mean that's all he's doing.

it could be depression. it also could be from a simple sickness like a cold or something. however that is also a sign of feline leukemia, which is very serious. if he is allowed outside it could very well be feline leukemia. if not than I highly doubt it, either way he needs to be taken tot he vet, and if he was taken and all the vet said is he's sick he needs a new vet.

I doubt cats sleep that long, plus you would have to observe them for 24 hours to see if they really sleep that long. My cats dont sleep that much while I'm awake.

Sounds like too much sleeping, but I know some cats sleep much more than others.
If he is physically OK, then don't worry about it.
