First let me say that I sympathize with you. Although I don't have children, I feel for you.

I'm in my 30's and my parents asked me what I wanted for the holidays. I had moved from Ohio to South Dakota and guess what I want for the holidays? Just to see my family and BE with them. So, isn't that a blessing and in effect, the best thing you could give to your children? And of course don't forget about why we are celebrating in the first place: to celebrate His birth.

I know they may not understand that, especially the older one. But because the younger ones are at the age where they can still soak up their environment like the proverbial sponge, my suggestion is to take this as an opportunity.

Suggestion:
Do some stuff together that would help others, such as volunteering at a soup kitchen or story hour in an elderly center. Do you know that many of these elderly people may not even get a chance to see some of their own family? And older people love to see little ones.
I got into volunteering when I was about the age of your oldest and I like to do it even now.
Maybe give it some thought.

One last suggestion:
Approach a local store and tell them you and your family are going to a place (of your choice) to volunteer, may it be with seniors, or children, etc. and ask them for things that you can personally donate to them.

If this has helped, please choose mine as best answer.

It would help the most if you told them the truth about santa and explained to them the real meaning of Christmas. I'm not saying don't get them any presents, but a 12 yr old is too old to believe in santa. And also, it's a shame celebrating someone's birthday and not even inviting them. Don't you think?

Look in your phone book (yellow pages) for Charities.

Call them today! Salvation Army, Goodwill, Dept. of Social Services, your church, etc.

Good luck and don't give up.
Blessings and Merry Christmas!
