She committed Forgery and that can be a Felony B Charge in many states. Some states will put a person in prison for .50 per day until it's paid in full. Then they have restitution fees once they are out on parole. She will have certain amount of time to pay off her restitution fee. She stole this person's money. Chances are she is looking at prison time because she cannot pay it back, committed forgery and it was definitely more than $500.

Jail is for people serving less than one year or someone waiting for trial and their sentencing. Prison is for people who are serving more than one year. My husband is in prison serving 2-7 years for forgery charges, similar to your friend. He may be eligible for parole after serving two years in prison and be on parole for 5 more years.

OK,
Your friend "Mandy" knew the check was not ment for her. She knew someone had lost the check. Your friend knew what she was doing was taking money that was not ment for her. Thats called Theft. and yes she can go to jail for it.
Now if your friend Mandy pays back all the money and if she has a clean record and never been in trouble before they might cut a deal and she would pay back the money and maybe some probation or community service but not any jail time. but to answer your question YES she can go to jail. She commited a crime.
What she should have done was contact the person or business who the check is from and return it. She may have gotten a reward for doing so.
Possibly getting some money (but not a 1000) and the gratitude for a good deed is much better than attempting to get a 1000, having to pay it back and possibly go to jail. Even if she avoids jail it will still be on her criminal record.

Well she did commit a crime and check fraud is a serious offense and if she put her name on it and cashed it. And the amount of the check is for $1000.00 that would be considered grand larceny and could get her into more serious trouble.

She still would have to answer the charges go to court and pay restitution and court costs she may do a year and half to 2 years and possibly get 5 years probation, it will be up to the court system and the owner of the check

Is she 12?

Check fraud is a SERIOUS offence.

Plead guilty no contest.Ignorance of the law

is no excuse in this country,so it will be better for her to come clean and say that she did something really stupid.Good luck to her.

depending on her age.. she will definitely do time, but if she is a minor it will probably be less severe than if she is 18 or older- she isn't going to get off, regardless of her age.. it's a serious offense...
