If he is starting to learn his letters, Michael's craft stores sells wooden letters on wheels that link up with magnets to form a train. So you could buy a set that spells his name.
These are compatible in size with train sets that have similar magnets at the front and back of each piece, but if the wooden letters weigh less than the metal trains, they tend to pull apart. So it is best to match them to plastic/light-weight train sets.
Also, I have seen Thomas Trains or fire engines in the form of a light-weight foldout frame, similar to pop-open laundry boxes, with mesh sides. These can be used for play, for decoration at his party, or storing stuffed toys.
The Thomas the Train books are very popular with kids and easy to read to them. So if you are going with this theme, you can pick both fun and practical items, including sleeping bags etc.
You might check at your local library to see if your son likes these books. My sister's 2 and 3 year old sons like the books that have big photos of all different kinds of trains and trucks, and they never get tired of reading these over and over.

Do birthdays that create memories.
3 year-olds don't build a ton of memories, so don't stress making it super-special. If you fall into the 'top the neighbors' trap now, you'll be in real trouble in a few years.
At 3, fill it with music, color, friends and a few treats. Maybe get a fun video, or include a visit somewhere fun (Children's Museum, zoo, etc.). A lot of young kids get sick from all the excitement- don't let that happen to you either.
A few Thomas accessories would be fine- and easy to find.

Thomas. It is educational to a certain extent and apparently it is all the rage with preschoolers. So are The Wiggles.
