What's really funny is, people say the draft will keep rich politicians from forcing only the poor to join the army.

However, I do not see how this is possible, because it is an all-volunteer army.

I think people should have to serve our country, but not for those reasons. It is the people who have no respect for this country and the traditions that it was founded on who should have to spend a year in Iraq, not just people who happen to be rich.

Ihatehippies --- You're funny. It is an all-volunteer military, but sometimes, when people like my husband are not qualified for a decent-paying position and are otherwise unable to provide for their families, they are "forced" into joining the military because, heck, they're cornered. They need the money. It's what happens. Regularly. I know plenty of folks here in the same position.

Now, to answer the question...
I once talked to a servicemember (when my hubby first went to Basic) who believed that every young man should be forced to serve at least two years in the Armed Forces. It helps them mature and grow, and stop being such little kids. I think the draft is a GOOD idea. The military teaches discipline, pride, confidence, respect, and responsibility. It teaches sacrifice, selflessness, and duty. As much as it would suck for those who didn't volunteer, it would be a good experience, I think. There's too many people in our society who avoid reality, act like children, and ruin their lives and those of others.

Now, the downside to the draft is, well, you might go to war. You probably will. You won't have a choice.

But in the end, it'd be good for you.

That's my opinion, anyway.

If you look at both World Wars the draft help foster a sense of national unity. People saw it as their duty to defend the nation. The negative was authoritarian attitudes and intolerance toward those who were not unified. During the 1930s and 40s veterans groups use to beat up Jehovah's Witnesses.

If you look at Vietnam the draft only fostered resentment. People saw it as a source of cannon fodder for a political folly. The fact that young men couldn't vote, but could be drafted only added to the resentment. The negative was a distrust of the government that can be just as bad as unquestioning loyalty.

Considering there is no draft right now i am assuming you are talking about the instituted draft from World War I, II, Korea, Vietnam....I would say that during World War I and II it provided women an avenue into the work place. I would also think that during Korea and Vietnam the draft led to national resentment...during World War I and II patriotism led the way....but because Korea and Vietnam was felt as far away places having their own problems people didn't want to be forced to taken away to fight....But I could be totally wrong

As one of my fellow answerers said before the draft is started anyone who has had a Honorable discharge in the last 15 years from the US Armed Forces, will be called up for Active duty and it is called Inactive Reservist and when you get your HD you are automaticly enrolled and are avaliable for recall until you are 44 years old. The DRAFT is called Selective Service and when you become 18 years of age you must register for Selective Service.
The pros {positive} sides t exists to serve the emergency manpower needs of the Military by conscripting untrained manpower, or personnel with professional health care skills, if directed by Congress and the President in a national crisis. Its statutory missions also include being ready to administer an alternative service program, in lieu of military service for men classified as conscientious objectors.Thecons {negative} are Anyone who is a Student at Collage orHigh school is exempt from being called, Woman are not allowed to register for Selective Service only Men between the ages of 18 and 25 documented or illeagal are allowed and must register. Hope this answers your questions. Also here is a link for Guys who have registered yet. https://www4.sss.gov/regver/register1.asp

People willing to follow a madman's lead is one thing, giving them no choice in the matter is quite another. One of the planks in GWB's platform was that he would not start up the draft again. If he lied about that too then I'm nominating him for "the biggest douche in the universe", a man like that couldn't lose.

People do not understand the military, anyone who has served in any facet of the military would be called in to active duty before the draft was implemented. Its called inactive reserve, ask any uniform service member about this.

Effects... what are the 'effects' of the military draft.

http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/affect.html

One effect of a military draft is that a more diverse cross section of the population will be represented in the military.

Got me?
