I suppose the alternative is - no rules to confine people. That way people are free to murder, rape, steal, vandalize, etc., with no consequences. And if you think people wouldn't jump at the chance, then you don't know people.

It's only confining if you have no choice if you follow that religion or rules or not.
But we all have the ability to choose what we will or will not follow, and most of us live in nations where we have the liberty to make those choices without threat of loosing our lives.
Yes my religion has a lot of "rules" but no one is making me follow it, I'm grown up, I moved away from home a long time ago, and I follow it because I want to, not because anybody is making me.
thanks

Because some people like to have a set of rules to live by. It gives them the freedom to opt out of thinking about the hard things for themselves, and allows them to believe that there's a purpose to everything nasty and destructive in the world, even if they don't understand it.
It comforts them to think that as long as they stick to the rules, they'll be all right, no matter what the short-term consequences are.

Man, with his finite, material mind. Always tries to put limitations
on an infinite Creator.
The 10 Commandments. 5 Pillars. 8-fold Path. The 12 Steps.
Jesus said all mans religion teaches for doctrines are the
commandments of men.
And they know nothing of the weightier matters of the Law,
like judgment, and mercy!

Jesus gave us a set of rules to live our lives, step outside of these rules and you run the risk of being very unhappy.

I think the infamous "dark ages" is the ultimate example of the reasons. When you opress people of exchanging ideas through verbal exchange and written word, you can make up any truth you want. If you tell the same lie over and over with no opposition, it quickly becomes the truth. (Hitler said that)

As far as Christianity; the rules are made by God, not men. And the commadments He sets are for our good.
