It depends on the state. Someone charged with 1st degree murder could be looking anywhere between 25 years to life...with or without parole, of even facing the death penalty, but it all depends on the judge and details of the crime and the state the murder was committed in. However, the death penalty is very unlikely.

18 years is the average. (First time offense) Some stay 25 years and a few do 40. Also depends on how much money one has.

25-life. but personally i think that the death penalty shouldn't be an option, nor parole...b/c facing years and years of prison and knowing that you'll die in there is the best punishment. it's not fair that a person took someones life purposely and then gets to keep theirs. lives (in the emotional state) are lost in prison. that's how it should be...also they shouldn't have TVs in prison. prison gets me so mad b/c their able to do so much in there. if there was a situation were someone did dumb crimes like tax fraud and unarmed bank robbery that's different, but for people who raped and murdered and that stuff...they shouldn't get ANYTHING. that's ridiculous.
